As a trained musician performing
as a solo singer on a regular basis my musical background often
informs my artwork, in some cases becoming the conceptual material
and in others the physical material. My current practice combines
sculpture, performance and film. Continuing the parallel between
the roles of musical performer and artist, I often adopt the
persona of a soloist, using my body in most works. I'm interested
in making objects that manipulate the body. In recent work I
have made sculptures based on musical instruments and used performance
to activate them. The sculptures have a subverted figurative
relationship with the body - they are not a representation but
an extension that fits into it. My intention is to show the
sculptures being used. This allows me to explore the two extremes
of passivity and virtuosity, questioning the responsibility
of the performer to manipulate the instrument and make its unstructured
sound musical. Film allows me to maintain a sense of intimacy
between viewer and performer. The tone of this intimacy draws
upon the melancholy glamour of jazz ballads sung by female solo
singers. I want this tragically beautiful tone to haunt the
viewer like a song. |
