Traditionally wind instruments are classified as Dionysian - private,
internal and feminine. My instrument sculptures are a contemporary
response to this subject involving the subversion of a number of conventions,
one of which is the gendered classification system. Instead of the
wind instrument producing sound from the internal depths of one body
and letting it out into the world, the breath becomes reciprocal via
the kiss - the player's exhalation is the instrument's inhalation
and vice versa; the breath remains entirely internal between the two
bodies.
